One of West’s graduates, a  project manager from a Fortune 500 company, talks about what he has learned to help him succeed in receiving the next promotion. He started out in an entry level position over 20 years ago, and the ultimate advice he can give was what he had learned in his final class here at West. Promote yourself first must be the desire and then acting on it professionally is the next.

Find out what is going on in the world concerning your industry and be able to bring relevant ideas to the table. Subscribe to industry magazines.

Improve your technological skills. Don’t balk at social media, new software and applications that  can improve your productivity and your company’s.

Volunteer for projects but not for the sake of competition. Volunteer because you know you can bring value to the project. Don’t overwhelm yourself with overtime for the boss when it actually turns into wasted time for you and the company.

Display a positive attitude to change and development.

Be known as stability during office conflict.

Be known as a trusted and loyal partner.

New ideas are excellent as long as you can execute them effectively.

Re-examine what you are already doing. Small adjustments can create great results.

Love what you do. If you are not having fun, it’s time to move on.
